 The Government of Ontario has issued a call for proposals for the Poverty Reduction Fund<http://news.ontario.ca/tbs/en/2015/05/call-for-proposals-for-local-poverty-reduction-fund-now-open.html?utm_source=ondemand&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=o>.  The Fund will provide $50 million over six years to support innovative and sustainable community-driven initiatives to improve the lives of those most affected by poverty. The deadline for applicants is June 10, 2015.

 The Trico Foundation’s blog released a case study<http://tricofoundation.ca/embers-staffing-solutions-social-enterprize-case-study/> of Embers Staffing Solutions, one of the four recipients of the 2014 Social EnterPrize.  The case study of the final recipient, JUMP Math, will be released in the near future.

 International News

 (South Africa) The South African Breweries Foundation announced the launching of the SAB Social Innovation Awards<https://sab.praxisgms.co.za/xaLogin/SAB/regLogin.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fdefault.aspx>.  The awards will be open to any innovation solution that offers a credible prospect of meeting a demonstrable social and/or economic need evidenced by low-income beneficiary groups- women, youth, persons with disabilities and rural populations.  A total of R1.85 million will be offered to first, second and third prize winners.

 (United Arab Emirates) Entrepreneurship with Impact Ventures, has launched the Impact Training Program<http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/entrepreneurship-with-impact-ventures-launches-the-impact-training-program-with-various-partners-503276301.html> in partnership with PepsiCo, MBC, Silatech, and Mansour Foundation.  The program will

create a regional network of social entrepreneurs across Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, providing a series of five-day boot camps where participants will learn from real life success stories and be given networking opportunities.

 (Hong Kong) Yeh Family Philanthropy, in partnership with the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund, have launched the Nurturing Social Minds<http://7thspace.com/headlines/508547/speech_by_cs_at_launch_ceremony_of_nurturing_social_minds.html> education service programme, which will work to expand the social entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem in Hong Kong.

 (USA) The Correction Centre<http://www.bizjournals.com/boston/news/2015/05/10/out-of-work-and-school-bostons-youth-have-new.html?page=all> opened in Boston on May 10, 2015.  The facility will connect young people with jobs, skills training, education and other opportunities.  The initiative received $270,000 funding from the federal Social Innovation Fund<http://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/social-innovation-fund> along with matching funds from local foundations.

 (Australia) The 2015 Telstra Women’s Business Awards will be featuring a first ever category for social and for purpose enterprises<http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/nominations-now-open-for-2015-telstra-business-womens-awards/story-fnhocxo3-1227352279945>.  These new additions recognize the reflected change in the Australian business world.

 (Germany) GfK Verein released the results of a study of Millennial-generation business students and professionals<http://www.gfk-verein.org/en/press/next-generation-leaders-aware-its-strengths-and-demands-respect> where nearly 50% of respondents said that work which has a positive impact on society is a top-three criterion for measuring success in their professional careers.

 

 Events & Conferences

 

The Toronto Enterprise Fund will be holding a workshop, Feasibility and Market Research<http://ccednet-rcdec.ca/en/event/2015/05/19/feasibility-and-market-research>, at the offices of the United Way Toronto, 26 Wellington East, 12th Floor Boardroom A, on May 19, 2015, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.  Participants will learn the value of conducting a thorough feasibility study of the market opportunity that their social enterprise idea represents.

 The Social Enterprise Catalyst Gala<http://www.secatalyst.ca/> will be taking place on May 20, 2015 at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo BC.  The event will combine speakers, social enterprise pitches in a Dragons’ Den style format, and expert judges for a high-energy, high-impact event that raises the profile of Vancouver Island social enterprises and the social enterprise sector as a whole.

 The Centre for Social Innovation will be hosting an event, Untold Stories by Social Innovators<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/untold-stories-by-social-innovators-tickets-16753483119>, at its CSI Annex, 720 Bathurst Street, Toronto, on Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm.  The evening will feature stories from six top social innovators.

The Social Innovation Research Conference<http://www.sirpa.fudan.edu.cn/sirc/> will be taking place on May 21-22, 2015 at the School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.  The event will examine innovations in public and social policy and in public service delivery.
